By using wildfire risk as a symptom of the societal challenges related to sustainability, the paper shows why and how learning to coexist with wildfire entails a dramatic social-ecological transformation. It does so by looking at the efforts of the Catalan wildfire management system to understand and integrate wildfire as a potentially desirable landscape perturbation during the last decades. It shows how this endeavour triggered a set of changes in institutional arrangements and power relationships of the wildfire management system. However, the paper also warns that in the absence of systemic transformations in social values and social-ecological relationships underlying risk, better knowledge on wildfires might paradoxically end up reinforcing risk.
