Usually, empirical sciences, in particular neuroscience, rely on realism about objects. We perceive a candle because a candle is present in the external world. As I will show with simple examples and considerations, contrary to this common believe, visual neuroscience undermines realism for principled reasons. There is no world of mind independent objects. Perception is in principle subjective and can neither be objectified nor eliminated. I will show empirical evidence for this claim and discuss implications for psychology and philosophy.
