Abstract: SNARE-mediated fusion reactions are the corner stone of most intracellular organelle trafficking and intercellular communication via the secretion of chemical signals. In the brain, neurons use two specialised organelles for the SNARE-dependent secretion of such signals: synaptic vesicles that release classical neurotransmitters and dense core vesicles that release neuromodulatory signals, such as neuropeptides and neurotrophic factors. This lecture will highlight the contributions that our lab is making to the understanding of the SNARE-dependent secretion from these two organelles and the modulation of secretion by use-dependent mechanisms and in disease.
