How to increase risk competencies in children - an introduction of the book "Wer wagt, gewinnt?" (Martignon & Hoffrage, 2019)
During the last year, Laura Martignon and I, Ulrich Hoffrage, have written a book on this issue, which is now supposed to appear in April 2019, published by Hogrefe/Bern. This research seminar will give a brief introduction and summary of this book. In this book, we conceptualize risk competency with a four-step model: (1) recognizing and identifying risk, (2) analyzing and modelling risks, (3) weighing and comparing, and (4) deciding and acting. The focus of the first part of the book lies on didactic in schools and on building up risk competencies along these four steps. The focus of the second part is more applied and psychological: Child games involving risks and uncertainty, risk and personality, explaining differences with respect to willingness to take risks, and chances and risks involved in digitalisation, in particular in school.
