Guest lecture on Gertrude Stein by Prof. Ulla Haselstein
You are all warmly invited to a guest lecture about Gertrude Stein, the notorious modernist poet who wrote ‘A rose is a rose is a rose’. Avant-guard, experimental, and at the center of the Paris poetry scene for the Lost Generation, Stein was an important force in Anglo-American literature and culture. This introductory lecture will explore how Stein borrowed from popular culture, especially the aesthetics of seriality (as in the famous rose poem just cited) associated with dime novels and early radio broadcasts. Prof. Ulla Haselstein, based in Berlin, is a world expert on Stein and the author of several books on this exceptional woman and writer.
