Abstract: I will present our recent efforts to map brain circuits in the mouse. We are currently developing a reference framework for the unbiased molecular definition of neuroanatomy, based on mapping the spatial distribution of gene expression on a whole-brain scale. We are particularly interested in circuits that control motivated behaviors, focusing on the basal ganglia and habenula, and I will in light of this present results of mapping the opioid system in the striatum at the anatomical and functional level, as well as subtypes of striatal projection neurons and the molecular code that underlies spatial diversity within the striatum.
