Weather forecasting for future climates
Extreme events such as heatwaves and precipitation extremes are predicted to become more frequent and more extreme with climate change. We are already seeing unprecedented extremes in today’s climate, a clear sign of climate change. But despite our knowledge about changes in future extremes, and our ability to attribute these to the changing climate, it remains difficult to predict the exact timing, amplitude, and duration of such extremes on timescales of several weeks to months in advance. This contribution will give an overview of the current state of weather and climate forecasting, and how it may translate into the impacts of extreme weather and climate change.
