Drawing on 36 months of ethnographic fieldwork in various flower shops in Switzerland and Chicago, this contribution tackles the “floral ethics” defined as the right practices of handling flowers based on a set of standardized rules among members of the occupation. This research integrates theory from the sociology of work and professions and will offer a more comprehensive understanding of how and why tensions result between the florist’s professional expertise and the aesthetic sensibility of the customers towards flowers. The empirical results show that the floral ethics become a strategy for protecting and maintaining occupational legitimacy. Findings on the micro-level regarding diverging conceptions of the “work well done” will crystallise issues that exceed the situated context of ethnographic research and offer a broader argument on the asymmetry that characterises the service relationship between the people receiving a service and those giving it.
