About the speaker

Estelle Hary, a graduate of ZHDK, is a designer whose work intersects with data, algorithms, and law. In 2014, she co-founded the Design Friction studio. With a background of 7 years at the Commission Nationale Informatique et Libertés (CNIL), Estelle was the first designer to join the institution. Her significant contribution involved shaping a doctrine at both national and European levels regarding the alignment of user interfaces and user experience with GDPR compliance. She achieved this by developing analytical frameworks and evaluation methods that bridge the domains of design and law.Currently, Estelle is finalizing her thesis on public algorithm transparency at RMIT University in Melbourne. Utilizing an action research approach, she collaborates with various central administrations and local authorities to address this issue. Additionally, she serves as an associate researcher at the Centre de Recherche en Design (ENS Paris Saclay, ENSCI - Les Ateliers) and the CNIL Innovation Laboratory (LINC).
