In the spring and summer of 2022, a global survey on sustainability in the cultural sector was launched by the Institute of Geography and Sustainability at the University of Lausanne. More than 200 organizations from all over the world took part, providing insights into the social, environmental and governance aspects of sustainability. How sustainable are these organizations? And what could be done to enable them to become key players in the sustainability transition?
This research has highlighted the work of some pioneering institutions, including the Sydney Opera House and the National Galleries of Scotland, who will share some insights into how they became two of the most sustainable cultural organizations in the world. What challenges did they face and how did they overcome them?
The Sydney Opera House will share how, for the first time, the organization has embedded social and environmental sustainability as key drivers of the Opera House's new three-year strategy, moving away from its long-standing separate action plans. The new approach works towards collective action, with sustainability built into the organisational plan from the ground up. The National Galleries of Scotland will explain how they have developed governance structures and partnerships to support their mission. They will talk you through some examples of their current work, ranging from reusing exhibition builds, to reducing the carbon footprint of their loans programme, to switching to greener materials for collections care.
