The Executed Renaissance in English Translations
The plight of displaced Ukrainian intellectuals in the context of the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war echoes back to the “Executed Renaissance” – a generation of artists in the 1920s and 1930s who were targeted by the Soviet regime.
The movement’s innovative and experimental poets crafted a new breed of Ukrainian poetry – one which opposed prevailing ideologies, reimagined cultural and political futures, and proved too threatening to the state.
About the talk:
The hour-long talk and following discussion will focus on a unique period in the history of Ukrainian literature and culture showcasing the finest examples of art in literature, music, painting and theatre. We will discuss some outstanding literary works of that period available for Anglophone readers and learn how to better understand them.
About Prof. Skriabina:
Before the Russian-Ukrainian war, Prof. Viktoriia Skriabina was Associate Professor in English Philology and Translation at Kyiv National Linguistic University, Ukraine. She is currently a visiting researcher at the English department with the Language Interference in Multilingual Learners of English project.
