Workshop organisé par Agathe Mora (UNIL) et Julie Billaud (Graduate Institute IHEID).
This 4-day international exploratory workshop will consider the figure of the anti-hero/anti-heroine (henceforth, the anti-hero*ine) and the lens of anti-heroism in order to better understand the interplay of power, agency and morality in relation to contemporary struggles for justice, rights, and social change. In a moment of heightened political and ideological polarisation, how do people invested in the pursuit of justice, rights and/or social change navigate the greyzone of everyday morality? The lens of the anti-hero*ine allows us to look at ways of acting that are fraught with compromise and analyse them, rather than responding with moral condemnation or shallow relativism. Methodologically, we will reflect on issues of power and representation in academic writing and experiment with ‘anti-heroic’ writing techniques. The workshop will follow the logic of an inverted panel in which authors will only give short presentations of previously circulated papers and discussants will occupy the centre stage and be responsible for offering in-depth comments on their assigned papers. Authors will have the opportunity to discuss their work with activists and human rights defenders directly involved in struggles for justice and social change. The scientific exchange, which brings together an international, as well as interdisciplinary, group of scholars will contribute new scientific knowledge through a number of high-impact outputs, including an open-access edited volume.
