The eastern part of present-day Afghanistan is sometimes called the Indo-Iranian Borderlands, as it stands between Iran/West Asia and India/South Asia. However, it also has been a border/frontier between Central and West Asia, as well as Central and South Asia. As to the history of this significant frontier, little has been known until the end of the last century, especially to the period after the fall of the Kushan dynasty. Nevertheless, thanks to the efforts of scholars in various fields, such as archaeology, linguistics, art history, and numismatics, our knowledge about the post-Kushan period of this region has remarkably increased. This lecture will focus on the new developments in this field over the past couple of decades and try to give an overview of its history until the rise of Muslim dynasties on this frontier.
